"Lose 10 pounds in 3 days."
Television, radio, and print ads with descriptions of miraculous weight loss are in abundance. While it is possible to have dramatic weight loss in short amounts of time, we need to assess how unhealthy it is to do so.
Our bodies like consistency. It gravitates towards the familiar. If there is an extra 10 pounds you would like to shed, it is very likely that you did not gain it in 3 days. It took you months or even years. So what’s the rush?
The additional weight that many of us are now carrying (if not induced by medication) may have gradually resulted from poor nutrition and a low level of physical activity. As such, those habits will need to change. Habits do not change over night. When our lifestyles include balanced nutrition and lots of physical activity, we will begin to shed some of the excess weight. However, keep in mind that a healthy weight loss goal is roughly one-half to two pounds per week.
Committing
Oftentimes, in our quest to make necessary improvements in our lives, we try to do too much at once. This can be a sure-fire way of setting ourselves up for failure. An example of this is clearly represented with New Year’s resolutions. “This year, I will lose enough weight to get rid of my fat jeans”. With such solid resolve and high expectations, we set off to conquer the additional inches on our bodies. With passion we set off on our program. As weeks pass by, the once strong urge to run with Rover has subsided. Confused and frustrated at our inability to commit, we end up feeling overwhelmed.
We forgot (or simply do not know) one basic principle - that is, in any fitness or wellness program we should first engage the mental aspect of our endeavors. Long-term progress in our wellness program only happens when our whole body becomes our ally. We often only see the physical aspect of Warrior One, squats or even abdominal curls. That might explain why we work out with headphones and read while riding the cardio bike. How many of us actually take the time during the day to rehearse our fitness workout or a new lifestyle change in our heads?
When looking at doing more with a wellness program not only do we need to strive for physical changes by adding more training sessions, but we also must incorporate mental engagement.
Here are just a few things to remember:
- Progress and success are charted with logs and journals. Always consistently log food intake, number of sessions, exercises performed, and most importantly, how you felt in detail before, during, and after your sessions. This builds history, which allows us to review past failures and trends, and provides insight for improvement. This requires a huge commitment from us.
- To commit both mentally and physically affords us the possibility of seeing or visualizing our progress in our heads before it happens. Incorporating new lifestyle habits or fitness routines by first mentally performing that action helps it to form a mental imprint on us, which stays with us even during times of slow progress.
In the next couple of months, you will notice the addition of classes with a strong fitness theme. Yoga will always be an integral part of our current offerings. As part of our vision of providing wellness services, we will strive to have our schedule provide additional classes to ensure a well-rounded program. This will further promote and support a strong body and a calm mind.
All new classes will continue to place a heavy emphasis on instruction with a non-competitive format.

PT Hour
Once a month, James will offer a 2-hour fitness information workshop. Learn why lying abdominal work might not be the best way to build a functional core. Go back to your workout with information that can help you break through plateaus and move your workout to a new level.
We hope that as you continue your journey with us, you are learning. Our aim is to educate and arm you with information. If you have a question about an asana, feel free to discuss it with one of the instructors before or after class. If you have a question about fitness or nutrition, James would be more than happy to assist you. Never hesitate to ask. More than anything, each time you leave the studio, we hope that you walk out with a bit more knowledge than when you walked in..
We hope to see you soon!
Best Regards,
James and Melissa
